Learn the language of flowers this month

The world of floriography (yes, it's a thing) is a beautiful but complicated one.

Flowers can brighten your day and make you feel special but did you know every flower has a meaning, whether love, strength or sunshine?

Some flowers even take on a new meaning depending on the number you offer.

For example, a single daffodil is said to bring bad luck, while a bunch of them can be given to wish someone good luck.

Here's our quick guide to what's what in the colourful world of flowers.

Fresh flowers in every colour of the rainbow

Red roses

We're not sure there's any flower whose meaning is more well-known than the red rose.

Commonly given to lovers and partners as a symbol of romance and affection, just a single rose can do the job.

Red roses are associated with the Greek goddess Aphrodite, the goddess of love and passion.

The number of roses you send and receive also has a meaning, for example giving one single rose signifies love at first sight.

Here's a few other special numbers:

  • 3 roses – Given as a gift for a one-month anniversary
  • 6 roses – You're infatuated and want the recipient to be yours
  • 10 roses – You want to tell someone their love is perfect for you
  • 12 roses – This is a classic bouquet size to ask someone to be yours
  • 15 roses – Give 15 roses to say sorry

Orchids

Meaning "admiration", it's hard not to admire the delicate and intriguing orchid.

These highly distinctive flowers symbolise rare and delicate beauty, which is something you'll communicate when you give one of these flowers to someone close to you.

White lily

Beautiful lilies resemble purity, innocence and sympathy, which is why they are often used at funerals.

However, that doesn't mean you can't use them as gifts as they also are showstoppers in giant bouquets, or alone in arrangements.

In terms of floriography, these lilies are said to mean a rejuvenation of the soul, which is why they're linked to the natural balance of life and death. They are an always beautiful flower and while not one you'd choose for a bouquet, they look striking in an arrangement.

Gerbera daisies

You can't help but smile when you see gerbera daisies.

Perhaps that's because these sweet flowers are said to mean cheerfulness and loyal love.

Gerberas add a pop of colour to any bouquet and are sure to bring joy to everyone when displayed in a vase in your home.

Carnations

A staple in many floral arrangements, carnations also have an important job to play when you want to send that message of love.

Each colour of carnation means something a little different, so choose wisely.

Light Red means "admiration", dark red means "deep love and affection", if you want to wish someone good luck then go for white petals and pink signifies a parent's undying love.

Yellow roses

Roses in a bright sunshine hue represent joy and friendship.

Pick roses with tight buds and watch the joy spread as they slowly open their petals to create a stunning display.
